This past week was the middle of my semester, and my professors wanted me to know it. I had 3 projects, a huge paper, and a midterm exam all in the same week. On top of that, I have work and some sort of social life to keep up with. I got it done, but it was because of a lesson I learned from one of my professors. It goes as follows:
Stephen Covey asked his class to guess how many rocks he could fit into a jar. They guessed and after they finished he started putting rocks in it. Once none of his big rocks could fit he asked, "Is the jar full?" They all replied, "Yes." He responded by taking out some gravel and began filling the same jar until no more gravel could fit. He asked again, "Is the jar full?" The students replied, "Probably not." Then he took out some fine sand and began fill the same jar. He asked, "Is the jar full?" The students replied, "NO!" He took out some water and began pouring it into the same jar until it was full to the brim. He asked his students, "What is the point of this illustration?" One student said, "There is always room for more in your schedule." Stephen responded with, "No. The point is that if you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never be able to fit them in."
It's these little lessons, that are sometimes learned outside the classroom, that truly help you manage your life. Get the big tasks done first, or you'll never have time to finish them. If you want to see a video demonstration, go here: http://michaelhyatt.com/put-the-big-rocks-in-first.html
