The Last Summer

Summertime is coming to an end. Another great season has come and gone, but for me, this one is special. This is my last “school” summer. I’m approaching my final year at Chapman and in just 9 short months I will be entering the real world. Despite the horror stories, I do not fear graduation.

As a Chapman University student for three years, I am confident that I will be prepared to take on the challenges of the professional world. I have been fortunate enough to intern at FX Network, BWR, and Rogers & Cowan during my time at Chapman. My internships have allowed me to apply what I was learning in the classroom to real projects. Getting involved with these companies was one of the best decisions I made.

If you didn't know, I am full of great advice and priceless wisdom. If I wanted to extend the best advice I had to I could to incoming students, it would simply be to take advantage of every opportunity that is put in front of you for the next four years. Each day Chapman presents something new and exciting for its students and it is very easy to look past or not embrace them. Don't do it! Push and challenge yourself to get involved with everything!

Whether it is the opportunity to join a club, fraternity/sorority, or intramural team, do it! Being so close to Los Angeles, Chapman is in the perfect location for great internships, so take advantage of it! You don’t know who you will meet, where it will lead, or how it will change your life until you go for it. I personally started as a media relations intern at FX Network as a sophomore and every internship after that was a result of someone I met while I was there. Once you get your foot in the door who knows where it will take you!

Over the next four years, you will develop valuable life and professional skills, create lifelong relationships, and above all else have the best time of your life. Just remember to say, “yes” to every opportunity that finds you, no matter how small or large because when your final year approaches and graduation is around the corner you want to be able to say, “I’m ready.”
